Founded in 2011, Seattle Design Fest has brought together designers, community members, experts, city officials, and business leaders to celebrate and explore how design improves the quality of our lives and our community. Each year the teams are given a theme, this year they needed to focus on how to design for BALANCE. WALSH was part of an awesome team lead by Encore Architects PLLC, along with Bykonen Carter Quinn Structural Engineering and Freres Lumber Co. The display was assembled at CEC, our Equipment Yard, and installed at South Lake Union park, in front of the Museum of History and Industry (MOHAI) on Friday, August 23rd and was on display till Monday, August 26th. It is constructed from nested parts routed out of Mass Plywood Panels (MPP) donated by Freres Lumber Co. Inc, out of Oregon. The interactive installation illustrated, “the importance of providing a baseline of stability in order to support a stable community. Living and thriving as an individual requires an interdependence on a community that provides access to education, a living wage, transportation, and mental and physical healthcare. All of these factors are threaded together by the need for housing.”
The Seattle Design Festival (SDF) is a program of Design in Public, a multidisciplinary nonprofit organization that promotes the role of design in improving our city. Design in Public is a strategic initiative of AIA Seattle, a chapter of the American Institute of Architects.
